Honest limits

Do hashtags still matter on Pinterest?

A little, but less than the words around them. Pinterest still lets you add hashtags: its Help Center tells you to "write a description of your Pin (you can also include hashtags)". The same Help Center says descriptions "are used by our algorithm to determine relevance for delivery". So the description as a whole carries the weight, and hashtags are one small part of it. Pinterest does not publish an ideal number of hashtags or say how much weight one tag carries. What it does describe is tagged topics: when you create a pin you can tag up to 10 related topics to help people searching for similar ideas find it. Topics are picked from Pinterest's suggestions, are separate from hashtags and are not shown to people.

Two limits of this tool: the sets are AI suggestions, not Pinterest data, so they cannot tell you how often a tag is searched or whether it is popular right now. And no hashtag rescues a pin that is off topic. A clear image, a specific title and a useful description come first.

How do I add hashtags to a Pinterest pin?

When you create a pin, add the hashtags in the description field, usually on the last line after your helpful copy. Pinterest's Help Center confirms the description can include hashtags. For a pin you already published, open it, choose Edit Pin and update the description if Pinterest lets you edit that pin.

How many hashtags should I use on Pinterest?

Pinterest does not publish an ideal number. We suggest a handful of specific tags that describe the pin, which is why each set here has four to six. A long block of loosely related tags makes the description harder to read and adds nothing useful.

Are hashtags the same as tagged topics?

No. Hashtags are typed into the description and people can see them. Tagged topics are chosen from Pinterest's suggestions when you create a pin, up to 10 per pin, and Pinterest says people will not see them. Use both: topics for the category, a few hashtags for specific phrases.

Can this tool tell me which hashtags are popular right now?
