Why claiming fails
Claiming your website links it to your Pinterest business account, so Pins from your site show your profile and you see their analytics. Pinterest checks one of three things: a p:domain_verify meta tag in your homepage head, an HTML file in the root folder, or a DNS TXT record. This tool checks all three.
Most failures come from the page Pinterest actually downloads. The tag sits in the body instead of the head, a caching plugin still serves the old page, a tag manager adds the tag with JavaScript, or the site answers on www while you claimed the bare domain. Firewalls and "coming soon" modes can also block Pinterest's request.
A website can only be claimed by one Pinterest account. Pinterest says DNS changes can take up to 72 hours, and once a site is claimed you can remove the tag or file. A claimed site doesn't make a domain immune to spam blocks, but it is the proof of ownership you need if you ever have to appeal one.
How it works
Four steps, about a minute
- 1
Enter your domain
Use the address you typed into Pinterest's claim box, with or without www.
- 2
Add the file name if you used one
For the HTML file method, paste the pinterest-….html file name Pinterest gave you.
- 3
Read the board
Each method gets its own card, plus checks for redirects, firewalls and duplicate tags.
- 4
Fix and click Verify again
Clear your site and CDN cache first, so Pinterest sees the new page.
