Where the "AI modified" label comes from
Pinterest adds an "AI modified" label when it finds AI signals in a Pin. It reads metadata that follows the IPTC standard, runs its own classifiers, and accepts self-disclosure. This checker reads the first of those: the IPTC source type, C2PA content credentials and generator tags inside your file. It cannot predict Pinterest's classifiers.
Many AI tools write these tags for you. Images from OpenAI's models and Adobe Firefly carry content credentials, and Photoshop's generative features can mark an edited photo as a composite with AI. A real photo can pick up a tag from an AI upscaler or a phone's AI editing feature, which is the most common reason a genuine photo gets labelled.
This tool doesn't strip tags, and we don't recommend it. If AI made or changed an image, the label is accurate and honest disclosure keeps your account in good standing. If a genuine photo was labelled and the file shows no AI tags, appeal the label through Pinterest's support team.
How it works
Four steps, about a minute
- 1
Drop in the image
The exact file you plan to pin. It is read in your browser and never uploaded.
- 2
Read the tags
IPTC source type, C2PA content credentials and generator names are pulled from the file.
- 3
See the likely outcome
Each tag is explained, with what Pinterest is likely to do with it.
- 4
Disclose or appeal
Keep the label for AI images. For a genuine photo with no AI tags, appeal through support.

Tags the checker reads
- IPTC digital source typeThe standard field Pinterest names: trainedAlgorithmicMedia (made by AI), compositeWithTrainedAlgorithmicMedia (edited with AI), digitalCapture (camera) and others.
- C2PA content credentialsA signed record of how the image was made, added by tools such as Adobe Firefly and OpenAI's image models.
- Generator namesTraces left by AI generators and their apps, such as Midjourney, DALL·E, Firefly, Stable Diffusion and ComfyUI.
- AI workflow dataPrompt and settings text that some generators save inside PNG files.
- What it can't seeInvisible watermarks such as Google's SynthID and Pinterest's own classifiers, which work on the pixels.
Questions
Asked often
How does Pinterest decide a pin is "AI modified"?
Pinterest's help center names three signals: metadata that follows the IPTC standard, its own classifiers that detect AI content without obvious markers, and self-disclosure by the content owner.
Can I remove the AI modified label?
Pinterest lets you appeal a label you think is wrong through its support team. If AI made or edited the image, the label is accurate, and stripping tags to avoid it goes against the spirit of Pinterest's rules.
Does the AI label reduce reach?
Pinterest hasn't said the label itself lowers distribution. People can choose to see fewer AI Pins in some categories, so labelled pins may reach fewer of those people.
Why was my real photo labelled as AI?
Often an editing app added an AI tag, for example an AI upscaler, generative fill or a phone's AI eraser. Check the file here. If it shows no AI tags, appeal the label.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The file is read in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
