Alt text written from your description
Pinterest alt text is a short description of what a Pin's image shows, read aloud by screen readers. Pinterest allows up to 500 characters. This generator turns your notes on the subject, the setting and any words on the image into three alt text options. It formats what you describe; it does not look at the image.
That is on purpose. Nothing is uploaded, so your image stays private, and the alt text says only what you told it, so it cannot invent a detail that is not in the photo. You are the one who can see the image, which makes your notes the best source.
Pinterest's help center says alt text makes your Pin more accessible to people who rely on screen readers, and that it currently works for standard and video Pins. Write it for that person first: what would they miss if they could not see the image?
How it works
Four steps, about a minute
- 1
Pick the image type
Photo, Pin with text on it, product, or step-by-step graphic. It changes how the options are worded.
- 2
Describe what you see
The main subject, the setting, and one or two details such as colors or what someone is doing.
- 3
Add the words on the image
Type any text overlay exactly as it appears, so screen reader users get the same headline.
- 4
Copy one option
Paste it into the Alt text field under More options when you create or edit a Pin.
How it works
What the generator does, and what it does not
The tool builds up to three options from your notes. The short option names the subject and the setting, for people who want to move on quickly. The full option adds your details. The text-first option leads with the words on the image, which suits text-heavy Pins such as recipe titles, checklists and quotes.
It also checks your notes for common mistakes: openers like "image of", hashtags, links, calls to action, styled Unicode letters and the same word repeated again and again. It does not look at your image, recognize people or guess what is in the photo. If you ever use an AI that describes images for you, compare its result with the picture before you publish, because it can get details wrong.
SEO
Does alt text help Pinterest SEO?
Pinterest's help page on alt text presents it as an accessibility feature and does not say it affects distribution. Pinterest does say that descriptions are used by its algorithm to judge relevance for delivery (source: Review Pin specs, Pinterest Help Center, checked October 2026). So put your search keywords in the title and description, and use alt text to describe the image honestly. If a keyword truly names what is in the photo, it belongs there once.
If writing titles, descriptions and alt text for every Pin sounds like a lot, the PinBoostr AI pin generator drafts all three for Pins made from your own posts, with alt text kept under 500 characters. You review and edit each Pin, and nothing publishes until you approve it.
For the rest of a Pin's text, the free pin title and description generator writes keyword-ready ideas, the pin size checker makes sure the image fits the feed, and our Pinterest SEO guide shows how titles, descriptions and boards work together.

How to add alt text to a Pin
On the web: create a Pin, upload the image, add the title and description, open More options and paste your text into the Alt text field, then publish. To change it later, open the Pin, click the three-dot menu, choose Edit Pin and update the alt text (source: Add alternative text to your Pins, Pinterest Help Center, checked October 2026).
In the app: tap the plus icon, choose Pin, pick the image, tap Next, then open Advanced settings to add alt text. Pinterest notes that business accounts should edit alt text on the web, while personal accounts can use the app.

Good alt text checklist
- Say what it isStart with the subject: "A bowl of tomato soup", not "Image of" or "Picture of". Screen readers already announce that it is an image.
- Add what mattersOne or two details a sighted person would notice: colors, the setting, what someone is doing.
- Include the words on the imageIf the Pin has a headline on it, put those words in the alt text, or screen reader users miss the main message.
- Keep it naturalWrite a sentence, not a keyword list. A keyword can appear once if it truly describes the image.
- Leave out links and calls to actionNo URLs, hashtags or "click here". Those belong in the title and description.
- Up to 500 charactersPinterest's limit. One to three sentences is usually plenty.
Questions
Asked often
How long can Pinterest alt text be?
Up to 500 characters, according to Pinterest's help center. Most good alt text is one to three sentences, well under that.
Where do I add alt text on Pinterest?
When you create a Pin on the web, open More options and use the Alt text field. For an existing Pin, open it, choose Edit Pin from the three-dot menu and update the alt text.
Does this tool look at my image?
No. It writes alt text from what you describe, so nothing is uploaded and it cannot invent details. You check the image; the tool handles the wording and the checks.
Should I put keywords in alt text?
Only if the keyword truly describes what is in the image, and only once. Alt text is for people using screen readers. Put your search keywords in the Pin title and description instead.
Should alt text include the text on my Pin?
Yes. If your Pin has a headline or other words on the image, include them, so screen reader users get the same message as everyone else.
Is it free?
Yes, with no sign-up. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
