To make a Pinterest board, click the plus (Create) icon in the left sidebar on pinterest.com, or tap + in the app, choose Board, type a name, decide whether to keep it private, then click Create. The rest of this guide covers every board task people search for: private boards, sections, covers, adding and removing Pins, merging, archiving, deleting, collaborators and reordering. Steps were checked against the Pinterest Help Center in October 2026. Pinterest renames menu items between app versions, so a label may differ slightly from what you see.

How to make a Pinterest board

On desktop (pinterest.com)

  1. Log in and click the square plus icon in the left navigation bar, then select Board. You can also click Create from your profile.
  2. Enter a board name. Pinterest may suggest one, which you can edit.
  3. Optional: turn on the secret (private) toggle or add collaborators.
  4. Click Create.

In the iPhone, iPad or Android app

  1. Tap the plus icon, then tap Board.
  2. Enter a name, set the secret toggle and invite collaborators if you want.
  3. Tap Create at the top right.

While saving a Pin

On desktop, hover over a Pin, click the chevron next to the suggested board name and choose Create board. In the app, tap a Pin, tap Save, then Create board. Name it and confirm. Business accounts follow the same steps.

How to make a Pinterest board private (secret)

Turn on the privacy toggle when you create the board, or edit it later. Pinterest's current Help Center calls these private boards; some app screens still say secret.

  1. Open the board from your profile.
  2. Click or tap the ellipsis icon next to the board name, then Edit board (some app versions show Edit board and header image).
  3. Turn on Make this board private and click Done.

Only you and people you invite can see a private board. Saving a Pin to a private board does not notify the person who posted it and does not add to its save count. Private boards and their Pins cannot be promoted as ads.

How to make a private board public

Use the same steps and turn the privacy toggle off. When you merge a private board into a public one, the destination board's privacy setting applies.

How to add sections to a Pinterest board

Sections organize Pins inside a board, which is the closest thing Pinterest has to a board within a board.

  1. Open the board and click or tap the plus icon at the bottom of the screen, then choose Section.
  2. Name the section and click Add (or tap Next in the app).
  3. To fill it on desktop, click Organize, select Pins, click Move and pick the section. In the app you select Pins right after naming it, then tap Done.

How to change a Pinterest board cover

Open the board, click the ellipsis next to its name, choose Edit board, click the plus icon on the cover and click Done. Pinterest says the cover can only be changed on desktop or iOS. On Android you can change the board's header image instead (Edit board and header image, then the pencil icon), and that needs at least one Pin on the board.

How to add Pins to a board

On desktop, hover over any Pin, click the down arrow next to Save, hover over a board and click Save. In the app, tap the Pin, tap Save and choose a board.

How to remove a Pin from a board

Without deleting it (move it)

Open the board, click the edit icon on the Pin, choose a different board or section from the Board dropdown and click Save. In the app, open the Pin, tap the ellipsis, Edit Pin, tap the current board name, pick a new one and tap Done. To move many at once, open the board, use Organize, select the Pins and choose Move.

By deleting it

Open the Pin, click the ellipsis, choose Edit Pin, then Delete and confirm. Deleted Pins cannot be recovered.

How to merge Pinterest boards

  1. Open the board you want to get rid of and click or tap the ellipsis icon.
  2. Choose Merge, then pick the destination board.
  3. Confirm with Move Pins and delete board.

On desktop you can also drag one board onto the center of another. Three things to know first: followers of the merged board do not transfer, the destination's privacy setting applies, and there is no undo. Reversing a merge means moving Pins back one by one. Sections merge the same way from the section's edit or ellipsis menu.

How to archive a Pinterest board

Open the board, click the ellipsis next to its name, select Archive (in the app, Archive board) and confirm. An archived board disappears from your public profile and you cannot save Pins to it. It sits at the bottom of your profile, below your other boards, and you can unarchive it at any time. Archiving does not reduce your board count.

How to delete a Pinterest board

  1. Open the board (in the app: profile picture, then Boards, or Saved on a business account).
  2. Click or tap the ellipsis, then Edit board.
  3. Click Delete at the bottom (scroll down in the app) and confirm with Delete forever.

Deleting a board deletes every Pin on it. To keep the Pins, move them or merge the board first. You have seven days to restore a deleted board from the Recently deleted section of your Saved tab. Pinterest says restoring works on desktop and Android only.

How to invite collaborators to a Pinterest board

Open the board, click the plus circle icon below the board name, search for a name, username or email and click Invite, or use Copy link to send the invite yourself. Under Collaborators can… you choose between Do (almost) everything (add, move and delete Pins and sections) and Save and comment, and whether collaborators may invite others. To remove someone, click the profile pictures under the board name and choose Remove. Collaborators leave the same way, with Leave. Whether shared boards still help reach is a separate question, covered in our group boards guide.

How to rearrange boards on Pinterest

On desktop, open your profile, click Saved, then the filter icon above your boards and choose A to Z, Last saved to or Custom. With Custom, drag a board into the gap between two others. In the app, tap Boards (or Saved on a business account), tap the up-down arrows and pick Recently saved, Oldest saved or Custom. To drag boards manually, press and hold a board, tap the arrows icon, drag and tap Done.

Why can't I create a new board?

Pinterest stores a limited number of boards per account. If you hit the limit, delete boards you no longer need; archiving does not free up space, and the new count can take a few days to update. Merging boards reduces the count too. Also check you are logged in to the right account, since signing in with Google or Apple can create a second one by accident.

Pinterest's own creator advice is to give boards specific, descriptive names, because "the more specific the better" for showing up in relevant searches. Its distribution guidance also lists relevant board placement, alongside titles and descriptions, as context that helps Pins reach people. That is the short version. For naming, descriptions, how many boards to run and when to restructure, see the board optimization guide, browse board name ideas, or draft keyword-led names with the free Pinterest board name generator.

Keeping boards fed with PinBoostr

Boards are the part you set up once. FAQ

Can you make a Pinterest board with someone?

Yes. Invite them when you create the board, or open the board later, click the plus circle icon below its name and invite them by name, username or email. You decide whether collaborators can do almost everything or only save and comment.

Can you make a board within a board on Pinterest?

Not a full board, but you can add sections. Open the board, click the plus icon at the bottom, choose Section, name it and move Pins into it.

How do I delete a Pinterest board without deleting the Pins?

Deleting a board deletes its Pins, so move them first. Either merge the board into another board, or use Organize to select the Pins and move them, then delete the empty board.

Can you get a deleted Pinterest board back?

Yes, within seven days. Go to your Saved tab, scroll to Recently deleted, choose Restore boards and pick the board. Pinterest says this works on desktop and Android.

Can other people see my private Pinterest boards?

No. Only you and the collaborators you invite can see a private board, and saving to it does not notify the original pinner.

Why can't I change my board cover on Android?

Pinterest only supports changing the board cover on desktop and iOS. On Android you can change the board header image instead from Edit board and header image.
